ATV and Off-Road Vehicle Insurance in Texas: What Riders Need to Know

June 18, 20264 min readBy McKnight Insurance Services

ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes aren\'t covered by your auto policy — and your homeowners policy won\'t help if you\'re injured or cause damage on the trail. Here\'s what you need.

ATV and Off-Road Vehicle Insurance in Texas: What Riders Need to Know

Texas has some of the best off-road riding terrain in the country — from the Hill Country to East Texas trails to private ranch land across the state. ATVs, UTVs, side-by-sides, and dirt bikes are a significant part of outdoor life for a large number of Texas families. But the insurance coverage most riders assume they have often doesn't exist in the situations where they need it most.

What Your Existing Policies Don't Cover

Auto insurance: Your personal auto policy covers vehicles registered and operated on public roads. ATVs and off-road vehicles are generally excluded — they're not designed for road use, and your auto policy won't cover them on trails, private property, or off-road parks.

Homeowners insurance: Your homeowners policy may provide very limited coverage for ATVs while they're on your property — but once you ride off your land, that coverage typically ends. It won't cover liability for injuries you cause to others, and it won't cover physical damage to the ATV from a trail accident.

The gap is significant: if you're injured in an ATV accident, cause an injury to a passenger or bystander, or damage someone else's property while riding, you may have no coverage at all without a dedicated ATV policy.

What ATV Insurance Covers

Liability — Covers bodily injury and property damage you cause to others while operating your ATV. If a passenger is injured, if you collide with another rider, or if you damage a fence or structure on someone's property, liability coverage responds. This is the most critical coverage for any ATV owner.

Collision — Covers damage to your ATV from a collision with another vehicle, a tree, a rock, or any other object. Trail riding involves real collision risk, and repairs or replacement costs can be substantial.

Comprehensive — Covers damage from events other than collisions: theft, fire, flooding, vandalism, and weather. ATV theft is a real risk, particularly for machines stored in outbuildings or transported on open trailers.

Medical payments — Pays medical expenses for you and your passengers after an ATV accident, regardless of fault. ATV injuries can be serious — this coverage provides immediate access to medical payment without waiting for a liability determination.

Uninsured/underinsured motorist — Covers you if you're injured by another ATV rider who has no insurance.

Guest passenger liability — Specifically covers injuries to passengers on your ATV. Some policies require this as a separate endorsement.

Trailer coverage — Covers the trailer you use to transport your ATV. Your auto policy may provide some liability while towing, but the trailer itself typically needs separate coverage.

Accessories and custom equipment — Covers aftermarket additions like winches, light bars, lift kits, and custom wheels. Standard policies may have limits on accessory coverage — if you've invested significantly in upgrades, make sure they're covered.

Texas-Specific Considerations

Ranch and private land riding: A large portion of Texas ATV riding happens on private ranch land. Liability coverage is important even on private property — if a guest or neighbor is injured while riding on your land, you can face significant liability.

Off-road parks and organized events: Some Texas off-road parks and riding events require proof of liability insurance. A dedicated ATV policy satisfies this requirement.

UTVs and side-by-sides: Utility task vehicles (UTVs) and side-by-sides have become increasingly popular and increasingly valuable — some models cost $25,000 or more. Make sure your policy limits reflect the actual value of your machine.

Youth riders: If your children ride ATVs, make sure your policy covers them. Some policies have age restrictions or require specific endorsements for young riders.

Getting the Right Coverage

ATV insurance is relatively affordable, especially compared to the cost of an uninsured accident. The right policy depends on your machine type, how and where you ride, and whether you transport your ATV on a trailer.
