Personal Umbrella Insurance in Texas: Why More Families Need It in 2026

August 24, 20265 min readBy McKnight Insurance Services

Lawsuit verdicts and liability claims are rising across Texas. A personal umbrella policy is one of the most affordable ways to protect your family's financial future.

Most Texas families think about insurance in terms of what they own — their home, their cars, their belongings. But one of the most important things to protect is something less tangible: your financial future. And in 2026, with liability verdicts and legal costs continuing to rise, a personal umbrella policy has never been more important.

Despite being one of the most cost-effective coverages available, personal umbrella insurance remains one of the most underutilized. Here is what it is, why it matters, and who needs it.

What Is a Personal Umbrella Policy?

A personal umbrella policy provides an additional layer of liability coverage that sits on top of your existing home and auto insurance. When a claim exceeds the limits of your underlying policy, your umbrella kicks in to cover the difference — up to the umbrella's limit, which is typically $1 million to $5 million.

Think of it this way: your homeowners policy might carry $300,000 in personal liability coverage. Your auto policy might carry $300,000 per accident in bodily injury coverage. Those limits sound substantial — until you are facing a serious lawsuit.

A single serious auto accident with significant injuries can generate a claim well in excess of $300,000. A lawsuit arising from an incident on your property — a guest who falls and suffers a traumatic brain injury, for example — can reach seven figures. Without an umbrella policy, anything above your underlying limits comes directly out of your personal assets.

Why Umbrella Coverage Matters More in 2026

Jury Verdicts Are Getting Larger

Texas courts have seen a significant increase in large jury verdicts over the past several years. What the insurance industry calls "nuclear verdicts" — awards of $10 million or more — have become more common, and even mid-range verdicts have grown substantially. The legal and medical cost environment has shifted, and liability exposure has grown with it.

More Ways to Be Sued Than Ever

Social media, home-sharing platforms, and the gig economy have created new liability exposures that did not exist a decade ago. If you rent out a room on a home-sharing platform, host gatherings at your home, have a pool or trampoline, own dogs, or have teenage drivers in your household, your liability exposure is higher than the average family.

Your Assets Are Worth Protecting

If you own a home, have retirement savings, carry investment accounts, or earn a professional income, you have assets worth protecting. A judgment against you can attach to bank accounts, investment portfolios, and future wages. An umbrella policy is the most cost-effective way to put a wall between a lawsuit and everything you have worked to build.

Who Should Have a Personal Umbrella Policy

The short answer is: most homeowners and families in Texas. But certain situations make umbrella coverage especially important.

You have teenage drivers. Teen drivers are statistically the highest-risk drivers on the road. A serious accident involving your teenager can generate a liability claim that far exceeds standard auto policy limits. An umbrella policy provides critical protection during these years.

You own a pool, trampoline, or other attractive nuisance. These features increase your liability exposure significantly. If a neighbor's child is injured on your property, the claim can be substantial.

You own dogs. Dog bite claims are among the most common homeowners liability claims. Certain breeds can make it difficult to obtain coverage, and the claims can be significant.

You have significant assets. The more you have, the more you have to lose. If your net worth exceeds your underlying liability limits, an umbrella policy is essential.

You are active on social media or in public life. Defamation and personal injury claims arising from online activity are increasingly common. Some umbrella policies include coverage for these exposures.

You volunteer or serve on boards. Volunteer activities and board service can create personal liability exposure that your homeowners policy may not fully cover.

What Does a Personal Umbrella Policy Cost?

This is where most people are pleasantly surprised. A $1 million personal umbrella policy typically costs between $150 and $300 per year — roughly $15 to $25 per month. For $2 million in coverage, you might pay $200 to $400 annually.

The cost is low because umbrella policies are excess coverage — they only pay after your underlying policies have been exhausted. Carriers are not paying the first dollar of most claims, which keeps the premium affordable.

When you consider that a single serious auto accident or premises liability claim could easily generate a $1 million judgment, the cost-to-benefit ratio of an umbrella policy is hard to beat.

How to Get an Umbrella Policy

To qualify for a personal umbrella policy, you typically need to carry minimum underlying liability limits on your home and auto policies. Most carriers require at least $300,000 in homeowners liability and $250,000/$500,000 in auto liability before they will write an umbrella.

If your current underlying limits are lower than this, you may need to increase them before adding an umbrella — but the combined cost of higher underlying limits plus the umbrella premium is almost always less than you would expect.
