Tree Removal Business Insurance in Texas: What Arborists and Tree Services Need

July 25, 20265 min readBy McKnight Insurance Services

Tree removal is one of the highest-risk trades in Texas. Here is what DFW tree service businesses actually need in their insurance program — and what gaps to watch for.

Tree Removal Business Insurance in Texas: What Arborists and Tree Services Need

Tree removal and tree service work is consistently ranked among the most hazardous occupations in the country. In Texas — where severe storms, ice events, and the sheer size of mature live oaks, pecans, and cedars create constant demand for tree work — the risk profile is even more pronounced. Whether you're running a tree service in Mansfield, doing storm cleanup across Tarrant County, or handling large removals in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, your insurance program needs to be built around the specific and serious risks of this trade.

Why Tree Work Carries Exceptional Risk

Working at height near structures. Tree removal almost always involves climbing or using aerial equipment in close proximity to homes, fences, power lines, and other structures. A falling limb or a miscalculated cut can cause catastrophic property damage in seconds. This is the exposure that defines tree service liability, and it's why insurance carriers classify tree work as a high-hazard trade.

Chainsaw and equipment hazards. Chainsaws, chippers, stump grinders, and aerial lifts are all serious injury risks. Chainsaw injuries in particular can be severe and life-altering. The combination of power equipment, working at height, and often tight job site conditions makes injury exposure a constant concern.

Storm work creates compressed timelines and elevated risk. After a major storm in the DFW area — and North Texas sees significant storm activity, including ice storms that are particularly hard on trees — tree service businesses face pressure to work quickly. Rushed work in post-storm conditions, with damaged and unpredictable trees, is when the most serious accidents happen.

Property damage exposure is high. A tree that falls in the wrong direction, a limb that drops onto a roof, a chipper that throws debris — the potential for significant property damage in tree work is real and present on every job. In densely developed suburban areas like Mansfield, Arlington, and the broader DFW metro, there's almost always something valuable nearby that can be damaged.

Vehicle and equipment exposure. Tree service trucks, chippers, stump grinders, and trailers are expensive assets that are on the road constantly. Commercial auto exposure is significant, and equipment theft from job sites and trailers is a real problem in the DFW area.

Coverage a Texas Tree Service Business Should Have

General liability insurance is the foundation, covering third-party property damage and bodily injury. For tree service businesses, look for higher limits than you might carry in other trades — the potential severity of a property damage claim in tree work justifies it. Make sure completed operations coverage is included.

Workers' compensation is critical in tree work. This is one of the most dangerous trades in the country, and the injury severity — falls from height, chainsaw injuries, being struck by falling limbs — makes workers' comp essential. Texas doesn't require it for most private employers, but the exposure without it is severe.

Commercial auto insurance for trucks, chippers, trailers, and any other vehicles in your operation. Personal auto policies won't cover business-use accidents, and this is a common gap in tree service coverage programs.

Inland marine / equipment coverage for chainsaws, climbing gear, rigging equipment, stump grinders, and other tools. Tree service equipment is expensive and frequently stolen from job sites and trailers.

Commercial umbrella liability is strongly recommended for tree service businesses. The potential severity of a property damage or injury claim in this trade — a tree that falls on a house, a serious crew injury — can exceed standard GL limits. An umbrella policy provides an additional layer of protection above your primary liability coverage.

What to Watch for in a Tree Service Policy

Make sure your policy covers the full scope of your work. Insurance carriers often treat tree trimming and full tree removal differently. If your business does both, your policy needs to reflect that. A policy written only for trimming may not respond to a claim arising from a full removal.

Stump grinding is often a separate classification. If you offer stump grinding as part of your services, confirm that it's covered under your policy. Some carriers treat it as a separate operation.

Aerial equipment and lifts. If you use bucket trucks or aerial lifts, make sure your commercial auto and general liability policies address the specific risks of aerial equipment operation.

Subcontractor coverage. If you use subcontractors for overflow work or specialized jobs, your policy needs to address subcontractor liability. This is a common gap that can create significant exposure if a sub causes damage or injury on a job you're responsible for.

Documentation matters. In tree work, documenting the scope of work, pre-existing conditions on the property, and any hazards identified before the job starts can be the difference between a covered claim and a disputed one. Good documentation practices support your insurance program.
