ATV, UTV & Powersports
Insurance — Covering the
Toys Your Other Policies Don’t.

Your auto policy doesn’t cover your four-wheeler. Your homeowners policy doesn’t cover it either — at least not for much. If you ride off-road, haul it to the ranch, or let the kids take it out back, it needs its own coverage.

We cover:

ATVs & Four-Wheelers  |  UTVs & Side-by-Sides  |  Dirt Bikes & Off-Road Motorcycles  |  Golf Carts & Low-Speed Vehicles  |  Snowmobiles  |  Dune Buggies & Sand Rails  |  Street Motorcycles & Cruisers  |  and more

What Powersports Insurance Covers

Protection for your vehicle, your liability, and your gear — wherever you ride.

Powersports insurance covers the vehicles that fall outside what your auto and homeowners policies address — ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, golf carts, and other recreational and off-road vehicles. Like auto insurance, a powersports policy can include physical damage coverage for the vehicle itself, liability coverage if you injure someone or damage their property, and medical payments coverage for injury to you or your passengers.

Texas doesn’t require ATV or off-road vehicle insurance by law for riding on private property. But if you ride on public land, trails, or roads — or if your vehicle is financed — coverage is either required or strongly advisable. More practically: these vehicles aren’t cheap, accidents happen, and neither your auto policy nor your homeowners policy is designed to cover them.

We write powersports coverage for a single ATV on a ranch in Johnson County and a family with three UTVs used for weekend trail riding. The coverage is priced based on the type of vehicle, how it’s used, and the limits you choose — and it’s typically more affordable than most people expect.

Coverage options include:

  • Collision coverage — pays to repair or replace your vehicle if you’re involved in an accident, regardless of fault
  • Comprehensive coverage — covers theft, fire, vandalism, and weather damage when the vehicle isn’t involved in a collision
  • Liability coverage — pays for bodily injury or property damage you cause to others while operating the vehicle
  • Medical payments — covers medical expenses for you and your passengers regardless of who caused the accident
  • Uninsured / underinsured motorist — protects you if you’re hit by someone with no insurance or insufficient coverage
  • Accessories & custom equipment — covers aftermarket parts, custom wheels, winches, lift kits, and other modifications beyond the stock vehicle value
  • Roadside assistance — towing and recovery if your vehicle breaks down or gets stuck on a trail or off-road location
  • Trailer coverage — physical damage coverage for the trailer used to haul your powersports vehicle

Why Your Other Policies Don’t Cover It

Auto and homeowners each leave powersports vehicles exposed in different ways.

Most people assume their existing coverage extends to their ATV or side-by-side. It usually doesn’t — or it covers far less than they expect. Here’s exactly where each policy falls short.

Personal Auto Insurance

Personal auto policies cover vehicles designed for use on public roads. ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, and other off-road vehicles are specifically excluded from personal auto coverage. Even if you occasionally ride your ATV on a road or public trail, your auto policy won’t cover an accident involving it. A separate powersports policy is the only way to get auto-style coverage — collision, comprehensive, liability — on these vehicles.

Homeowners Insurance

Homeowners policies may provide very limited coverage for powersports vehicles kept on your property — typically only for theft or fire up to a very low sub-limit, and only while the vehicle is on your premises. The moment you ride it off your property, homeowners coverage stops applying entirely. There’s no liability coverage, no collision coverage, and no coverage for accidents away from home under a homeowners policy.

No Coverage at All

Many powersports vehicle owners assume one of their existing policies covers them — and ride for years without realizing neither one applies to an accident, theft away from home, or liability claim. The first time they file a claim, they find out the hard way. A standalone powersports policy is inexpensive relative to the value of the vehicle and the liability exposure it creates — and it closes the gap completely.

FAQ

Powersports insurance questions we hear all the time.

Does my auto insurance cover my ATV or UTV?
No — personal auto insurance covers vehicles designed and registered for use on public roads. ATVs, UTVs, side-by-sides, and other off-road vehicles are specifically excluded. Even if you occasionally ride your ATV on a road or public trail, your auto policy won’t cover an accident involving it. A separate powersports policy is required to get collision, comprehensive, and liability coverage on these vehicles.
Does homeowners insurance cover my ATV or four-wheeler?
Very limitedly — and only while the vehicle is on your property. Some homeowners policies provide a small amount of coverage for powersports vehicles stored at your home, typically for theft or fire up to a low sub-limit. The moment you ride off your property, homeowners coverage stops entirely. There’s no collision coverage, no liability for accidents away from home, and no coverage for theft that happens off your premises. A standalone powersports policy covers the vehicle wherever it goes.
Is ATV or UTV insurance required in Texas?
Texas does not require insurance for ATVs or UTVs operated solely on private property. However, if you ride on public land, state parks, or trails where registration is required, insurance may be required as part of that registration. And if your vehicle is financed, your lender will almost certainly require physical damage coverage. Beyond legal requirements, the liability exposure of operating a powerful off-road vehicle — particularly around other people or on shared trails — makes coverage worth carrying regardless of whether it’s required.
Does powersports insurance cover my aftermarket accessories and modifications?
Standard powersports policies cover the vehicle at its stock value — aftermarket accessories, custom wheels, winches, lift kits, upgraded audio, and other modifications are typically not included automatically. Most policies offer an accessories endorsement that adds coverage for custom equipment up to a specified limit. If your vehicle has meaningful aftermarket additions, we make sure the policy reflects the actual total value — not just what it came from the dealer with.
Can I insure multiple ATVs or powersports vehicles on one policy?
Yes — most carriers allow multiple powersports vehicles on a single policy, which simplifies management and often results in a lower per-vehicle cost than separate policies. You can typically mix vehicle types on one policy — an ATV, a side-by-side, and a dirt bike on the same account, for example. Call us with what you have and we’ll find the most cost-effective structure for your situation.
Does golf cart insurance work the same way?
Golf cart coverage is similar in structure — collision, comprehensive, liability, and medical payments are all available. The specific coverage you need depends on how and where you use it. A golf cart used only on a private golf course has different needs than one driven on community roads in a retirement or resort community. Some homeowners policies include golf carts used on the premises, but once they’re driven on community streets, a separate policy is typically needed. We’ll ask a few questions about how yours is used and find the right fit.
